Green Beech Hedging 60–80cm Bare Root

Elegant Deciduous Hedging with Year-Round Appeal

Green Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is one of the finest native hedging choices, offering a graceful, semi-evergreen screen with lush green leaves in spring and summer that turn coppery and persist through winter. Supplied as 60–80cm tall bare root plants, this size is ideal for establishing a hedge that’s quick to fill out while still being cost-effective for larger runs.

Beech hedging forms a dense, formal boundary with a refined appearance that suits both rural and contemporary garden styles.

Key Features

  • Height at delivery: 60–80cm (bare root, untrimmed)

  • Foliage: Bright green in spring and summer, copper-brown in winter

  • Growth Rate: Moderate – 30–60cm per year

  • Mature Height: 1.5–4 m depending on pruning

  • Root Type: Bare root – excellent for planting during dormancy (Nov–Apr)

Benefits of Green Beech

  • Holds dead leaves in winter, offering year-round privacy

  • Native British species, great for biodiversity and wildlife

  • Tolerates partial shade and a wide range of soils

  • Takes well to clipping, for neat or natural-style hedges

  • Strong structural presence without the heaviness of evergreens

Planting & Care

  • Planting Season: November to April (dormant season for bare root)

  • Spacing: 4–5 plants per metre in a single row; 5–7 per metre for a double staggered row

  • Soil: Moist, well-drained, not waterlogged; prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soil

  • Light: Full sun to part shade

  • Maintenance: Trim once annually in late summer to encourage bushiness and leaf retention

  • Watering: Water well after planting and in dry spells during establishment

Why Choose 60–80cm Bare Root Beech?

  • Perfect size for strong first-year growth and quick coverage

  • Cost-effective for long hedges or larger projects

  • Ideal for privacy hedging with natural seasonal beauty

  • Easy to plant, environmentally friendly, and UK-grown

  • One of the best formal deciduous hedge plants available

Pros:

  1. Cost-Effective: Bare root plants are generally cheaper than potted plants.
  2. Variety: Greater selection of species available.
  3. Establishment: Often establish quickly in the garden.

Cons:

  1. Timing: Must be planted during the dormant season (late autumn to early spring).
  2. Initial Care: Require careful handling and timely planting.

Preparation for Planting:

  1. Soak Roots: Immerse the roots in water for a few hours before planting to rehydrate them.
  2. Inspect: Trim any damaged roots with clean, sharp scissors.
  3. Dig Hole: Ensure the hole is wide enough to spread roots out without bending them.
  4. Consider Cutting back: Cutting back by up to 1/3, especially on taller plants will reduce possible losses and improve plant establishment.

Planting Process:

  1. Plant Depth: Plant at the same depth they were grown in the nursery, indicated by the soil mark on the stem.
  2. Fill Hole: Backfill with soil, ensuring no air pockets around the roots.
  3. Water: Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.

Possibility of Losses:

  • Adjustment Period: Some plants may not survive the transition due to transplant shock or poor initial care.
  • Mitigation: Proper planting techniques and aftercare, like regular watering and mulching, can reduce losses.

Aftercare Tips:

  1. Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the establishment period.
  2. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  3. Protection: Protect young plants from extreme weather and pests.

Bare root planting is a straightforward, economical way to enhance your garden, provided you follow these essential steps to ensure successful establishment.
