Kangaroo Paw

Anigozanthos 'Bush Fire' – A Vibrant Kangaroo Paw with Bold Red Flowers

Anigozanthos 'Bush Fire' is a striking variety of kangaroo paw, known for its fiery, vibrant red flowers and unique tubular shape. This Australian native is cherished for its dramatic, showy blooms that appear in late spring to summer, creating a spectacular display of colour in the garden. 'Bush Fire' is perfect for adding bold, architectural interest to your landscape, thriving in sunny spots and offering an eye-catching contrast with its evergreen foliage.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

Spring:

  • In spring, 'Bush Fire' begins to show its robust, strap-like green leaves, which provide a lush backdrop for the upcoming flower display.
  • As the weather warms, the flower stems start to rise, bearing the first buds that will soon open into vivid red flowers.

Summer:

  • The plant’s flowers burst into full bloom during the summer months, with clusters of red, tubular blossoms that resemble the paws of kangaroos.
  • These flowers attract pollinators such as bees and birds, making 'Bush Fire' not only a visually stunning plant but also a wildlife-friendly addition to the garden.
  • The plant maintains a tidy, compact growth habit, making it ideal for both small and large garden spaces.

Autumn:

  • In autumn, the plant’s vibrant blooms begin to fade, but the evergreen foliage continues to provide structure and colour to the garden.
  • The plant will enter a period of dormancy, but with minimal care, it can continue to thrive year after year.

Winter:

  • During the winter months, the foliage remains evergreen, though flower production slows down. In colder climates, 'Bush Fire' may benefit from some protection against frost.

Structure & Form

  • Height & Spread: Anigozanthos 'Bush Fire' typically grows to a height of 60–90cm, with a spread of 45–60cm. Its compact, bushy form makes it suitable for garden beds, borders, or containers.
  • Form: This variety has an upright, clump-forming habit with long, slender leaves and strong, tall flower stems. The flowers sit atop the foliage, creating a striking visual effect.
  • Growth Habit: 'Bush Fire' is a moderately fast-growing perennial that produces flowers in its second or third year of growth. It has a compact habit, making it ideal for smaller spaces or as a feature plant in larger gardens.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Borders & Edges: 'Bush Fire' is perfect for planting along borders, adding vibrant colour and height with its bold flowers.
  • Containers & Patios: Due to its compact size, this kangaroo paw is well-suited for containers, providing dramatic colour and texture to patios, balconies, or entryways.
  • Wildlife Gardens: The striking red flowers attract bees, butterflies, and birds, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
  • Australian-themed Gardens: 'Bush Fire' is ideal for native plant gardens or Australian-themed landscapes, where its unique appearance fits naturally with other native species.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Anigozanthos 'Bush Fire' thrives in full sun, which helps promote the most vibrant flower colour. It can tolerate some light shade, but too much shade may result in fewer blooms.
  • Soil: This variety prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soil. It is tolerant of drought once established but benefits from regular watering during dry spells. It does not tolerate waterlogged soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA zones 9–11, 'Bush Fire' is well-suited to warmer climates. In colder areas, it may require winter protection or be grown in pots to bring indoors during freezing temperatures.
  • Maintenance: Anigozanthos 'Bush Fire' is low-maintenance, requiring little pruning. Dead flowers should be removed to encourage new blooms. It may require occasional thinning to maintain a tidy form.
  • Watering: While 'Bush Fire' is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from regular watering during dry periods to maintain healthy growth and encourage more flowers.
