Tilia platyphyllos 'Rubra' – Red-twigged Large-leaved Lime

Tilia platyphyllos 'Rubra' is a vigorous and stately lime tree, admired for its reddish young shoots, large heart-shaped foliage, and clusters of fragrant flowers in summer. Graceful and wildlife-friendly, it is an excellent choice for specimen planting, avenues, or adding long-lasting structure to large gardens and landscapes.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Reddish young shoots emerge, followed by large, bright green leaves.

  • Summer: Creamy-yellow, fragrant flowers appear in clusters, attracting bees and pollinators.

  • Autumn: Leaves turn warm yellow before falling, providing seasonal colour.

  • Winter: Strong framework with red-tinged young twigs adds subtle colour and texture.

Key Features

  • Reddish young shoots – Distinctive colouring that sets it apart from other limes.

  • Large, heart-shaped leaves – Create a bold canopy and excellent shade.

  • Fragrant summer flowers – Nectar-rich, highly attractive to pollinators.

  • Fast-growing – Establishes quickly into a medium to large tree.

  • Hardy and adaptable – Thrives in a wide range of UK conditions.

Perfect For

  • Specimen planting – A commanding feature tree with striking foliage and flowers.

  • Avenues and driveways – Elegant when planted in rows.

  • Wildlife gardens – Flowers are a valuable food source for bees.

  • Large landscapes – Provides strong structure and shade.

Growing Tips

  • Sun/Position: Prefers full sun to partial shade.

  • Soil: Moist, fertile, well-drained soil is best; tolerates clay and loam.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK.

  • Care: Minimal pruning required; best done in winter when dormant. Water regularly during dry spells in the first few years.

Looks Great With

  • Other stately trees – Combine with Oak, Beech, or Plane for grandeur.

  • Autumn performers – Acers, Liquidambar, or Nyssa extend seasonal colour.

  • Evergreens – Yew or Holly for year-round contrast.

  • Spring bulbs – Daffodils or Bluebells naturalised beneath its canopy.

Tilia platyphyllos 'Rubra' is a magnificent lime tree, combining reddish young shoots, fragrant summer flowers, and bold foliage. Perfect for specimen planting, avenues, or wildlife gardens, it delivers elegance, shade, and multi-season interest in larger landscapes.
