Elaeagnus × ebbingei 'Compacta' (Oleaster 'Compacta') – Tough Evergreen Shrub with Year-Round Appeal

Elaeagnus × ebbingei 'Compacta' is a reliable, compact evergreen shrub valued for its dense, silvery-green foliage and easy-going nature. The leathery leaves carry a subtle metallic sheen on their upper surface and a silvery underside, creating a gentle light-reflecting quality that brings year-round interest to the garden. More restrained in habit than the standard Elaeagnus × ebbingei, 'Compacta' is well suited to smaller spaces without sacrificing any of the toughness the species is known for.

In autumn, small, creamy-white flowers appear tucked among the foliage. Though easy to overlook, they carry a surprisingly sweet, pervasive fragrance that drifts through the garden on mild days — one of this shrub's most charming seasonal qualities.

Exceptionally resilient, 'Compacta' tolerates coastal exposure, urban pollution, drought once established, and a wide range of soil types, making it one of the most adaptable evergreen shrubs available for UK gardens.

Habit & Appearance

Foliage and form. 'Compacta' forms a dense, bushy, rounded mound of growth. Its leaves are oval, slightly wavy at the margins, glossy grey-green on top, and silvery-white beneath — a combination that catches and reflects light even in shaded or north-facing positions. The overall effect is one of quiet, understated elegance that complements both formal and informal planting schemes.

Flowers and fruit. Tiny, funnel-shaped, creamy-white flowers emerge in autumn, largely hidden beneath the foliage but unmistakable for their strong, sweet fragrance. These may occasionally be followed by small, oval fruits that ripen to red in spring, adding a further point of interest and providing food for wildlife.

Seasonal interest. As a fully evergreen shrub, 'Compacta' provides structure, screening, and foliage colour throughout every season, making it a dependable backbone plant in mixed borders and formal planting schemes alike.

Growing Conditions

Position. Thrives in full sun or partial shade. It will tolerate a north-facing aspect and performs well in exposed, coastal, or urban locations where many other evergreens would struggle. Its wind tolerance makes it particularly useful as a hedging or screening plant in open or seaside gardens.

Soil. Adaptable to most well-drained soils, including poor, dry, or sandy ground. It prefers a neutral to slightly alkaline pH but copes with a wide range of conditions. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils, which can cause root problems. Once established, 'Compacta' is notably drought tolerant.

Hardiness. Fully hardy throughout most of the UK, coping with frost, wind, and salt-laden air with ease.

Care

Watering and feeding. Water regularly during the first growing season to encourage a strong root system. Once established, supplementary watering is rarely needed except during prolonged dry spells. An annual mulch of organic matter in spring helps retain soil moisture and supports steady growth.

Pruning. 'Compacta' requires minimal pruning to maintain a natural, rounded shape. If tidying is required — or if it is being grown as a clipped hedge or formal specimen — trim lightly in late spring or early summer after the risk of hard frost has passed. Avoid cutting back into very old, bare wood as regrowth can be slow. Remove any reverted plain green shoots promptly if they appear, cutting back to the point of origin.

General maintenance. This is an exceptionally low-maintenance shrub that requires very little intervention once established. It fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules, improving the surrounding soil over time and benefiting neighbouring plants.

Ideal Uses

Versatile throughout the garden. 'Compacta' works equally well as a standalone specimen, a clipped formal hedge, an informal screening shrub, or a wind-filtering boundary plant. Its compact habit makes it suitable for smaller gardens and tighter spaces where the full-sized Elaeagnus × ebbingei might become too large. It pairs beautifully with other evergreens such as Pittosporum tenuifolium, Viburnum tinus, or ornamental grasses for a layered, year-round planting scheme.

Elaeagnus × ebbingei 'Compacta' combines resilience, fragrance, and year-round evergreen structure in one highly adaptable, low-maintenance shrub — a dependable choice for almost any garden setting.
