Stipa arundinacea (Anemanthele lessoniana)

Graceful, evergreen ornamental grass with copper-bronze tones

Stipa arundinacea, also known as Anemanthele lessoniana or Pheasant’s Tail Grass, is a graceful, semi-evergreen ornamental grass with arching green foliage that takes on warm copper, orange, and red tones as the seasons change. In summer, feathery flower heads rise above the foliage, shimmering in the breeze.

Perfect for softening borders, adding movement to mixed planting, or planting en masse in contemporary schemes, it thrives in sun or light shade and brings year-round interest with minimal effort.

Key Features:

  • Arching, fine foliage that turns bronze-orange in autumn

  • Feathery flower plumes in summer

  • Semi-evergreen and low maintenance

  • Adds movement and texture to planting schemes

  • Great in gravel gardens, borders or containers

Growing Conditions:

  • Position: Full sun to light shade

  • Soil: Moist, well-drained soil; tolerates dry spells once established

  • Hardiness: Hardy in most UK areas

  • Maintenance: Cut back dead leaves in early spring; divide every few years

Stipa arundinacea adds warmth and movement – ideal for low-maintenance borders, naturalistic planting or architectural contrast.
