Fagus sylvatica atropunicea – Purple Beech

Fagus sylvatica atropunicea, often known as Purple Beech, is a majestic tree renowned for its rich, dark foliage and stately form. In spring, new leaves emerge a vibrant red-purple, deepening through summer to lustrous dark maroon that shimmers in the light. As autumn arrives, the foliage warms to coppery bronze, many leaves persisting on the branches into winter to give structure and seasonal screening.

This variety is typically grown as a specimen tree for parks, avenues, and large gardens, but it can also be clipped into an impressive hedge, offering the same density and structure as green beech while adding dramatic colour. Hardy, long-lived, and adaptable, it thrives in most well-drained soils and copes well in sun or partial shade.

Why Choose Fagus sylvatica atropunicea?

  • Seasonal Beauty – Red-purple spring growth, dark summer foliage, copper autumn colour.

  • Year-Round Structure – Retains dry leaves in winter for screening.

  • Versatile – Grown as a specimen tree or clipped into a hedge.

  • Hardy & Adaptable – Thrives in well-drained soils; long-lived and reliable.

Planting & Care Guide

  • Position: Full sun to partial shade (best colour in sun).

  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil; avoid heavy, waterlogged ground.

  • Planting: Suitable for single specimen planting or as part of a hedge.

  • Watering: Water regularly during establishment.

  • Pruning: Trim hedges in late summer; specimen trees need minimal pruning.
