Hydrangea paniculata 'Pinkachu' is a stunning panicle hydrangea that puts on a spectacular seasonal display with its large, cone-shaped flower heads. Emerging creamy white in summer, the blooms gradually deepen to rich shades of pink and rose as the season progresses, providing months of ever-changing colour in the garden. A reliable and vigorous deciduous shrub, 'Pinkachu' is prized for its sturdy upright habit, strong stems that hold the heavy blooms without flopping, and its outstanding cold hardiness.

Habit and appearance

Upright and bushy with a tidy, rounded form. 'Pinkachu' produces a dense framework of strong, arching branches clothed in deep green, oval leaves. The flowers are borne in large, conical panicles that are well-packed with both fertile and showy sterile florets. As summer transitions into autumn, the blooms flush progressively deeper shades of pink, eventually drying to a warm parchment tone that adds structure and interest well into winter. The dried flowerheads can be left on the plant to provide off-season ornamental appeal or harvested for indoor arrangements.

Growing conditions

Adaptable and easy to please in most garden situations. Hydrangea paniculata 'Pinkachu' thrives in a position that receives full sun to partial shade, with at least four to six hours of direct sunlight each day producing the most prolific flowering and the richest pink colouring. Unlike the popular mophead hydrangeas, panicle hydrangeas are not fussy about soil pH and will perform well in a wide range of soil types. They prefer a moderately fertile, well-drained soil with good moisture retention. Improve sandy or clay soils with the addition of organic matter before planting, and water in well to establish.

Care

Low maintenance once established, with a simple annual prune to keep plants vigorous and floriferous. Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first season after planting while the root system is establishing. Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots in colder months. Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and generous flowering.

Pruning is best carried out in late winter to early spring before new growth begins. As panicle hydrangeas flower on new wood produced in the current season, they can be cut back hard each year without sacrificing the flower display. Remove all stems to a low framework of branches, cutting just above a pair of healthy buds. This encourages vigorous new growth and ensures the plant produces large, well-presented flowerheads. Spent flowerheads can be left through winter for visual interest and removed at pruning time, or deadheaded after flowering if a tidier appearance is preferred.
