Carpinus Bet Frans Fontaine

Upright Hornbeam

Carpinus betulus ‘Frans Fontaine’ – Refined Columnar Hornbeam for Structured Spaces

Carpinus betulus ‘Frans Fontaine’ is a superb upright, columnar form of hornbeam, valued for its slim habit, lush green foliage, and excellent structure. Elegant, resilient, and low-maintenance, it brings vertical emphasis and formal style to gardens and landscapes while thriving in a wide range of conditions.

A perfect choice for avenues, formal rows, narrow gardens, or architectural planting schemes, ‘Frans Fontaine’ retains the charm of the native hornbeam in a space-saving, modern silhouette.

Why Grow Carpinus betulus ‘Frans Fontaine’?

1. Slim, Architectural Form
With a distinctly upright, narrow habit, this cultivar grows tall while staying compact, ideal for smaller gardens, streets, or formal avenues.

2. Seasonal Foliage Appeal
Fresh mid-green leaves emerge in spring, creating dense summer canopies before turning warm golden-yellow in autumn, extending its seasonal interest.

3. Space-Saving & Versatile
Mature trees remain just 3–4 m wide, making them excellent for urban gardens, driveways, or tight borders where space is limited but height and structure are desired.

4. Hardy, Tough & Adaptable
Thrives in almost any soil, tolerates wind and pollution, and performs reliably in city, suburban, or rural environments.

5. Low Maintenance & Long-Lived
Naturally neat and upright, needing minimal pruning to maintain shape, and highly durable for decades of structure and beauty.

How to Grow Carpinus betulus ‘Frans Fontaine’

Position:
Prefers full sun to partial shade and performs well in sheltered or exposed sites.

Soil:
Very adaptable – thrives in moist, fertile, well-drained soils but tolerates clay, chalk, and urban conditions.

Watering:
Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, it is tolerant of both wet and dry periods.

Pruning:
Minimal pruning required. If needed, prune in winter or early spring to refine shape.

Growth Habit:
Slow to moderate-growing deciduous tree with a narrow, columnar crown. Mature height 10–15 m, spread 3–4 m.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy across the UK (H6). Tolerates wind, frost, and pollution.

Design Ideas

  • Plant in rows or avenues for strong vertical structure and formal rhythm.

  • Use as a specimen tree in narrow gardens or modern landscapes.

  • Frame driveways or entrances with elegant, upright accents.

  • Combine with ornamental grasses or clipped hedges for architectural planting schemes.

Final Thought

With its graceful, slender form and reliable resilience, Carpinus betulus ‘Frans Fontaine’ is a top choice for adding height, structure, and seasonal beauty to gardens of any size. Space-efficient and low-maintenance, it blends classic charm with contemporary elegance.
