From Low Maintenance Outdoor Plants

Pieris japonica ‘Pink Passion’ – Compact Evergreen with Deep Pink Spring Flowers

Pieris japonica ‘Pink Passion’ is a vibrant and compact evergreen shrub known for its rich pink spring blooms and glossy dark green foliage. This eye-catching variety produces masses of pendulous, bell-shaped flowers in early to mid-spring, creating a striking display above neat, tidy leaves. Compact and easy to maintain, it’s ideal for small gardens, containers, or woodland borders where it brings year-round colour and elegance.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Striking deep pink, bell-shaped flowers hang in long clusters, brightening shaded areas.

  • Summer: Glossy evergreen foliage adds structure and shine to borders.

  • Autumn: Foliage remains fresh and green as buds form for next year’s flowers.

  • Winter: Evergreen canopy provides structure and colour when other plants fade.

Key Features

  • Vibrant pink flowers – Abundant spring blooms contrast beautifully with dark green leaves.

  • Compact habit – Grows slowly to around 1–1.2m tall, ideal for small spaces.

  • Evergreen – Provides year-round texture and structure.

  • Hardy and reliable – Tolerates cold UK winters when sheltered.

  • Low maintenance – Easy to grow in acidic soil with minimal care.

Perfect For

  • Borders and beds – Adds colour and evergreen form.

  • Containers – Perfect for patios, terraces, or front entrances.

  • Woodland gardens – Thrives in partial shade beneath trees.

  • Acid-loving combinations – Complements Rhododendrons, Azaleas, and Camellias.

Growing Tips

  • Sun/Position: Best in partial shade; tolerates morning or dappled sun.

  • Soil: Requires acidic, moist, well-drained soil or ericaceous compost in pots.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy in most parts of the UK.

  • Care: Water with rainwater where possible. Mulch annually to maintain soil acidity and moisture. Lightly prune after flowering to remove spent blooms and maintain shape.

Looks Great With

  • Rhododendrons and Azaleas – Share similar soil and light preferences.

  • Camellias – Add colour continuity through early and mid-spring.

  • Heucheras and ferns – Provide textural contrast in shaded areas.

  • Spring bulbs – Snowdrops or Crocus enhance early-season displays.

Pieris japonica ‘Pink Passion’ is a refined, compact evergreen shrub that combines rich pink spring flowers with glossy year-round foliage. Hardy, low-maintenance, and elegant, it’s a superb choice for containers, borders, and woodland-style gardens.
