Rhododendron keleticum

Rhododendron keleticum – A Compact Evergreen with Purple Spring Flowers

Rhododendron keleticum is a small, compact evergreen shrub prized for its neat, low-growing habit and delicate purple to violet-pink flowers in spring. Its fine-textured foliage and tidy, mound-forming growth make it ideal for rockeries, borders, alpine gardens, and containers.

This dwarf rhododendron thrives in cooler climates and exposed sites, offering reliable flowering and year-round evergreen structure for small gardens or specialized plantings.

Why Grow Rhododendron keleticum?

Elegant Purple Flowers

In mid-spring, ‘Keleticum’ produces clusters of small, bell-shaped purple flowers that rise above the evergreen foliage. The subtle yet striking colour provides a soft, charming display in borders, rockeries, or alpine plantings.

Compact, Low-Growing Habit

This variety forms a neat, dense mound, typically 30–50 cm tall, making it perfect for rockeries, alpine gardens, container planting, or as a front-of-border specimen. Its tidy habit requires minimal pruning.

Evergreen Foliage

The small, leathery leaves remain attractive throughout the year, providing structure and texture even when the plant is not in bloom. The compact foliage creates consistent visual interest in any garden setting.

Hardy and Adaptable

Rhododendron keleticum is cold-hardy and tolerant of exposed conditions. It thrives in well-drained, acidic soils, making it a reliable choice for alpine or temperate garden settings.

Height and Spread

Typically grows 30–50 cm in height, with a similar spread. Perfect for rockeries, alpine gardens, low borders, or containers.

Where to Site Your Rhododendron keleticum

  • Rockeries and alpine gardens, where compact growth and purple flowers can shine

  • Front of borders, for low spring colour

  • Containers and patios, planted in ericaceous compost

  • Exposed or cooler gardens, where hardiness is required

How to Grow and Care

Soil

Prefers acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Improve garden soil with leaf mould or grit; use ericaceous compost for containers.

Light

Grows best in full sun to partial shade, especially in cooler climates. Shelter from harsh afternoon sun if necessary.

Watering

Keep soil evenly moist during dry periods. Avoid waterlogging to protect shallow roots.

Maintenance

Pruning: Minimal; remove spent flowers to maintain tidy appearance and encourage healthy growth.
Mulching: Apply organic mulch to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect roots.
Pests & Diseases: Generally trouble-free when planted in well-drained soil.

Perfect Plant Combinations

  • Other dwarf rhododendrons for layered alpine displays

  • Alpine perennials like Saxifraga, Campanula, or Primula

  • Dwarf conifers for year-round structure

  • Rock garden bulbs such as Crocus or dwarf Narcissus
