Ophiopogon nigrescens, commonly known as Black Mondo Grass, is a striking evergreen perennial grown for its dramatic, almost jet-black foliage. Forming neat, grass-like clumps throughout the year, it provides outstanding contrast in borders, rockeries and containers. During summer, delicate pale pink to lilac flowers appear above the foliage, followed by glossy black berries, adding even more seasonal interest.
With its compact habit, low-maintenance nature and unique colouring, Black Mondo Grass is perfect for bringing texture and contrast to gardens of all styles.
Unique Black Foliage – One of the darkest foliage plants available, its almost black, arching leaves provide year-round interest and create striking contrast with surrounding plants.
Evergreen Interest – Retains its dramatic foliage throughout the year, ensuring your borders and containers remain attractive even during winter.
Compact & Neat Habit – Slowly forms tidy clumps, making it ideal for edging paths, front of borders, gravel gardens and container displays without becoming invasive.
Summer Flowers & Berries – Produces small, pale pink to lilac bell-shaped flowers during summer, followed by glossy black berries that extend its ornamental appeal.
Hardy & Low-Maintenance – Fully hardy in the UK, Black Mondo Grass requires very little attention once established and is both drought tolerant and pest resistant.
Position: Thrives in full sun or partial shade. Foliage colour is often at its darkest when grown in a sunny position, although it performs equally well in lightly shaded areas.
Soil: Prefers moist but well-drained soil and adapts well to loam, sandy or free-draining clay soils. Avoid prolonged waterlogging during winter.
Watering: Water regularly after planting until established. Once settled, it is relatively drought tolerant, although occasional watering during prolonged dry spells will help maintain healthy growth.
Maintenance:
Ophiopogon nigrescens pairs beautifully with silver, lime-green and variegated foliage, where its dramatic black leaves create stunning contrast. Combine it with Heuchera, Hakonechloa, Hostas, Euphorbia 'Ascot Rainbow', or Carex 'Evergold' for striking foliage combinations. It also looks superb planted beneath Japanese Maples, alongside ferns, or woven through gravel gardens and contemporary planting schemes. Whether used as edging, in containers or as a feature amongst lighter-coloured plants, Black Mondo Grass adds texture, depth and year-round sophistication to any garden.
