Malus 'Golden Hornet' (Crab Apple)

Ornamental crab apple with spring blossom and golden fruits

Malus 'Golden Hornet' is a highly ornamental crab apple, valued for its year-round interest. In spring, it bursts into clusters of pink-tinged white blossom, loved by pollinators. These are followed by small, bright yellow crab apples that persist into winter, providing colour and food for birds.

Its compact, upright habit makes it a great choice for small gardens, wildlife-friendly planting, or even as a specimen tree. The fruits are also suitable for making jellies and preserves. Tolerant of urban conditions and low-maintenance, it’s a reliable tree for adding beauty and biodiversity.

Key Features:

  • Masses of fragrant white blossom in spring

  • Golden-yellow fruits persist into winter

  • Excellent for pollinators and birds

  • Compact and upright form for small gardens

  • Suitable for wildlife gardens, cottage borders, and jelly-making

Growing Conditions:

  • Position: Full sun to partial shade

  • Soil: Moist but well-drained; prefers fertile soil

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK

  • Maintenance: Prune lightly in winter if needed

Ultimate Height & Spread:

  • Height: 4–6m

  • Spread: 3–4m

  • Moderate growth rate; upright habit

Malus 'Golden Hornet' combines ornamental charm with practical wildlife value—ideal for year-round garden interest.
