Fatsia japonica, commonly known as Japanese Aralia, is a striking evergreen shrub admired for its large, glossy, deeply lobed leaves that bring bold architectural interest to the garden throughout the year. Its lush tropical appearance makes it a favourite for creating dramatic planting schemes, particularly in shaded areas where many other shrubs struggle.
The impressive palmate leaves form a dense, rounded shrub that provides year-round colour and texture. Their glossy dark green finish reflects light beautifully, helping to brighten woodland gardens, sheltered courtyards, and shaded borders.
In autumn, mature plants produce rounded clusters of small creamy-white flowers held above the foliage. These nectar-rich blooms attract late-season pollinators and are followed by decorative black berries that persist into winter, providing an additional food source for birds.
Fatsia japonica is exceptionally versatile, thriving in partial or full shade while also tolerating full sun in consistently moist soils. It performs well in urban and coastal gardens and is highly valued for its ability to create an exotic look with very little maintenance.
Ideal as a specimen shrub, backdrop planting, or in large patio containers, it pairs beautifully with ferns, hostas, and bamboos to create lush, tropical-inspired displays.
Hardy, reliable, and easy to grow, Fatsia japonica is one of the finest evergreen shrubs for adding year-round structure and bold foliage to UK gardens.
