Ceanothus ‘Blue Sapphire’ – Compact Californian Lilac with Intense Blue Flowers
Ceanothus ‘Blue Sapphire’ is a striking evergreen shrub, valued for its vivid cobalt-blue flowers and compact, spreading habit. In late spring to early summer, it becomes covered in dense clusters of intensely coloured blooms, creating a dramatic display that attracts bees and other pollinators.
The foliage is small, glossy, and deep green with subtle bronze tones, forming a dense, low-growing structure that works beautifully in borders or as a ground-covering shrub. Its arching growth habit gives it a relaxed, natural shape, often spreading wider than it grows tall.
Ideal for sunny, sheltered positions, ‘Blue Sapphire’ thrives in well-drained soil and is particularly suited to coastal gardens, where it tolerates wind and drier conditions once established. It is relatively low maintenance and benefits from light pruning after flowering to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth.
Perfect for adding colour, texture, and pollinator interest, this compact Californian lilac is a reliable and eye-catching choice for a wide range of garden styles.
