Mature root-balled instant hedging at Grasslands Nursery

The Best Instant Hedging for Quick Privacy in the UK

By Paul Watmore, Director at Grasslands Nursery

Instant hedging gives you a finished, full-height hedge on day one — mature plants grown for years and delivered ready to screen, instead of small plants you wait years for. The best options are root-balled or pot-grown laurel, Portuguese laurel, Photinia and yew, plus pleached trees for instant privacy above fence height. Here is how to choose, and what we grow.

What is instant hedging?

Instant hedging is mature, pre-grown hedging supplied at, or close to, its final height — as large root-balled plants, troughed instant-hedge units or big pot-grown plants. Because the plants are already several years old and well furnished to the base, you get an established-looking screen the day you plant, rather than waiting three to five years for small plants to grow up.

The best plants for instant hedging

For year-round privacy, evergreens are the top choice:

  • Cherry laurel — lush, glossy and quick to knit together; our most popular instant evergreen screen.
  • Portuguese laurel — more refined, smaller-leaved and very hardy.
  • Photinia ‘Red Robin’ — evergreen with bright red young growth.
  • Yew — the classic dense, formal evergreen.

Beech and hornbeam make excellent deciduous instant hedges too, holding their coppery leaves through winter. We grow much of our instant and mature stock as root-balled hedging — field-grown, lifted with the soil intact, and superb value for larger, established plants.

Instant hedging or pleached trees?

If you are overlooked at first-floor level, pleached trees — and ready-grown established pleached trees — screen above fence height while keeping light below. An instant hedge screens from the ground up. Many overlooked gardens use both. See our guide to pleached trees vs hedging.

How to plant and care for an instant hedge

The plants are large, so the groundwork matters: prepare the soil well, plant at the right spacing, firm root-balled plants in carefully, and — most importantly — water deeply and regularly through the first two growing seasons. A big plant has a lot of foliage to support while its roots establish, so generous watering is the key to success. Feed in spring and mulch to lock in moisture.

Why buy instant hedging from a grower

We grow our own mature hedging on our 30-acre Cheshire nursery, so you are buying plants we have raised and selected ourselves, with honest advice on what will work for your site and delivery across the UK. FAQs

What is instant hedging?
Instant hedging is mature, pre-grown hedging delivered at or near full height — root-balled plants, troughed instant-hedge units or large pot-grown plants — so you get a finished screen the day you plant, rather than waiting years.

What are the best plants for instant hedging?
Evergreens like cherry laurel, Portuguese laurel, Photinia ‘Red Robin’ and yew make the best instant hedges for year-round privacy; beech and hornbeam are good deciduous options that hold winter leaves.

How tall is instant hedging?
It is typically supplied from around 1.5 to 2m or more, depending on the plant and format, giving immediate screening.

How do I look after a newly planted instant hedge?
Water deeply and regularly through the first two growing seasons (the single most important factor), feed in spring, mulch, and firm root-balled plants in well.

Is instant hedging worth it?
If you need privacy straight away, yes — you skip years of growing time. It costs more than small plants, but you get a finished, established-looking hedge immediately.
