A dense Portuguese laurel hedge, tough enough for difficult sites

The Best Hedging for Clay Soil, Shade & Coastal Gardens

The right hedge in the wrong conditions will always struggle. Heavy clay, deep shade, a windswept coastal plot — these difficult sites put a lot of hedging plants off, but there are tough, reliable choices that positively thrive in them. Here is how to choose the best hedge for clay soil, shade, and exposed or coastal gardens.

The best hedging for clay soil

Clay is heavy and slow-draining, but it is also fertile — and several hedges relish it once established:

  • Hornbeam — the clay-soil champion, tolerating heavy and even temporarily wet ground better than almost anything. See our hornbeam hedging.
  • Hawthorn — a tough native that copes happily with clay and makes a wildlife-friendly hedge. Browse hawthorn hedging.
  • Cherry laurel and privet — both adaptable and forgiving on heavier soils.

Guelder rose, a tough native shrub for clay soil and wildlife hedging

Improve clay by digging in plenty of organic matter before planting, and avoid working it when waterlogged.

The best hedging for shade

These evergreens keep their colour and density with little sun:

  • Yew — happy in shade and the ultimate formal hedge. See yew hedging.
  • Holly — tough, evergreen and shade-tolerant, with berries for wildlife. Browse holly hedging.
  • Cherry and Portuguese laurel — among the best evergreens for dry shade.
  • Box — happy in shade for low, formal hedging.

The best hedging for coastal & exposed gardens

Salt-laden wind defeats many plants, but these shrug it off:

  • Griselinia — glossy, apple-green and superb by the sea. See Griselinia hedging.
  • Elaeagnus — tough, fast and wind-resistant, with fragrant autumn flowers. Browse Elaeagnus hedging.
  • Hawthorn and blackthorn — native and unfazed by exposure.

What about wet or boggy ground?

For ground that stays damp, native plants like dogwood, willow and hornbeam cope best — hornbeam in particular tolerates winter wet far better than beech, which prefers good drainage.

Give any new hedge the best start

Whatever your conditions, good planting makes the difference: enrich the soil with organic matter, plant at the right spacing, water well through the first couple of summers, and mulch to lock in moisture.

Difficult-site hedging FAQs

What is the best hedge for heavy clay soil?
Hornbeam is the top choice — it thrives on clay and copes with temporary wet. Hawthorn, cherry laurel and privet are also reliable.

Which hedge grows best in shade?
Yew, holly, and cherry or Portuguese laurel all keep dense and green with little direct sun.

What is the best hedge for a coastal garden?
Griselinia and Elaeagnus are the classic seaside hedges, both shrugging off salt wind; hawthorn is a tough native option.

Can I grow beech on clay?
Beech dislikes waterlogging, so on heavy, wet clay choose hornbeam instead — it looks similar but copes far better.
