Taxus baccata – English Yew
Overview:
Taxus baccata, commonly known as the English Yew, is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer renowned for its dense, dark green foliage, longevity, and versatility in the garden. One of the oldest native trees in the UK, it has been cultivated for centuries as a hedge, topiary subject, or majestic specimen tree. With proper care, Yews can live for hundreds, even thousands of years, making them a true investment for any landscape.
Habit & Size:
This conifer has a naturally bushy, upright habit with flat, needle-like leaves arranged in two ranks along the stems. It is slow-growing, typically adding 20–30 cm per year under ideal conditions. Unclipped, mature trees can eventually reach 15–20 m in height, though it is most commonly maintained as a dense hedge or shaped specimen. Taxus baccata is highly tolerant of pruning, even into old wood, making it ideal for tight, formal hedging.
Foliage & Fruit:
The foliage is a rich, glossy dark green throughout the year, providing reliable evergreen cover. Female plants produce striking, bright red, fleshy arils (commonly referred to as berries) in late summer to autumn, which are highly attractive to birds. All parts of the plant except the red flesh of the arils are toxic if ingested.
Growing Conditions:
English Yew thrives in a wide range of soils, provided they are well-drained. It performs best in full sun to partial shade and tolerates exposed, windy, and coastal sites. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and very low maintenance. Taxus baccata is also highly tolerant of chalky or alkaline soils, where many other evergreens struggle.
Uses in the Garden:
Hedges: The classic choice for a dense, long-lived formal hedge; clips easily for a sharp, neat outline.
Topiary: Extremely responsive to pruning, making it a favourite for topiary shapes and cloud pruning.
Specimen tree: Can be allowed to grow into a stately tree for large gardens or parkland.
Screening and shelter: Provides year-round privacy and wind protection.
Planting & Care:
For hedges, space plants approximately 30–60 cm apart depending on the desired speed of establishment. Water well during the first year and mulch to conserve moisture. Clip once or twice a year to maintain shape and density. Hardy in all parts of the UK (RHS H6).
Key Points:
Dense, dark evergreen foliage all year round
Extremely long-lived and tolerant of heavy pruning
Suitable for formal hedging, topiary, or as a specimen tree
Thrives in sun or shade and on a wide range of soils
Hardy and reliable throughout the UK
