Taxus Baccata ‘David’ – A Compact, Upright Yew for Stylish Structure
Taxus Baccata ‘David’ is a refined, upright-growing cultivar of the classic English yew, ideal for adding vertical interest and evergreen structure to your garden throughout the year. With its naturally narrow, columnar habit and rich, deep green foliage, ‘David’ is perfect for formal planting schemes, contemporary borders, and elegant container displays. Like all yews, it is long-lived, incredibly hardy, and responds well to pruning, making it a favourite for both topiary and low-maintenance structural planting.
Why Choose Taxus Baccata ‘David’?
Compact, Upright Form
‘David’ stands out for its naturally narrow, upright shape, making it a space-saving option where height is needed without the bulk. It’s ideal for planting in tight borders, lining pathways, or flanking entrances.
Evergreen Foliage
The glossy, dark green needles retain their colour year-round, providing consistent interest in every season and serving as a perfect backdrop for flowering plants or seasonal changes.
Excellent for Containers
Its tidy, vertical habit makes it perfectly suited for stylish containers on patios, terraces, or balconies, especially in symmetrical or formal arrangements.
Low Maintenance
Once established, ‘David’ is drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. It requires little pruning but can be clipped to shape if needed.
Hardy and Long-Lived
Fully hardy in the UK, this yew tolerates frost, wind, and urban pollution, making it an excellent choice for both rural and city gardens.
Ideal Planting Conditions
-
Light: Thrives in full sun to full shade.
-
Soil: Prefers well-drained soils; tolerant of most types including chalky or clay soils, provided drainage is adequate.

Size and Growth
Taxus Baccata ‘David’ is slow-growing, reaching around 1.5 to 2 metres in 10–15 years, with a slender spread of approximately 50–60cm. Its upright shape remains consistent without excessive pruning, making it particularly well-suited for narrow spaces.
