Viburnum Opulus

Guelder Rose

Viburnum opulus is a highly ornamental, wildlife-friendly shrub with year-round interest, making it a valuable addition to UK gardens. Its white flowers, bright red berries, and vivid autumn color provide seasonal beauty, while its tolerance of a range of soils and its low-maintenance nature make it a versatile and reliable shrub for hedging, borders, and wildlife gardens.

  • Leaves: Palmate leaves, with 3-5 lobes resembling maple leaves. Bright green in spring and summer, turning deep red or purple in autumn, offering vibrant seasonal interest.
  • Flowers: Produces flat-topped clusters (corymbs) of white flowers in late spring to early summer (May to June). The outer flowers are larger and more showy, while the inner flowers are smaller and fertile. These flowers are highly attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies.
  • Fruits: Following the flowers, the plant produces clusters of small, round red berries (drupes) in late summer and autumn. The berries are a valuable food source for birds, including thrushes and blackbirds, though they are toxic to humans if consumed in large quantities.
  • Height: Typically grows to around 3-4 meters (10-13 feet).

Viburnum opulus prefers full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate shade, it flowers and fruits more abundantly in sunnier locations. Grows well in a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. Prefers moist, well-drained soils but can tolerate periods of wetness. Low maintenance shrub. Prune in late winter or early spring, mainly to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Can also be lightly pruned after flowering to control shape and size if necessary.
