Viburnum Davidii

Viburnum davidii – An Evergreen Classic with Striking Berries

Viburnum davidii is a compact, evergreen shrub (H 1–1.5 m) that brings structure and beauty to the garden throughout the year. Its glossy, deeply veined, dark green leaves create an elegant backdrop in every season. In late spring to early summer, clusters of tiny white flowers appear, subtly fragrant and attractive to pollinators. When both male and female plants are present, these are followed by striking, metallic-blue berries that sparkle like jewels against the evergreen foliage. Hardy (H5) and versatile, this shrub is easy to maintain and particularly valuable for year-round interest in smaller gardens, mixed borders, or as a low hedge.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

Spring:

  • Flattish clusters of small white flowers bloom, lightly scented.

  • Pollinators are drawn to its nectar.

Summer:

  • Glossy, leathery, evergreen foliage provides structure.

  • Developing berries begin to form.

Autumn:

  • Metallic-blue berries stand out against dark foliage (if both sexes are grown).

Winter:

  • Evergreen leaves keep the garden fresh and structured during the colder months.

  • Hedging & Screening: Makes a neat, compact hedge or informal screen.

  • Wildlife Gardens: Flowers attract pollinators; berries provide food for birds.

Soil: Moist, well-drained soil; tolerates a wide range including clay and loam.
Maintenance: Low-maintenance; prune lightly to shape after flowering if required.
Hardiness: Fully hardy (H5) across the UK.
