Viburnum × bodnantense 'Charles Lamont' is an outstanding deciduous shrub, celebrated above all for its remarkable winter flowering. From late autumn through to early spring, its bare stems are studded with clusters of richly fragrant, deep rose-pink flowers that open on mild days and fill the cold garden air with a sweet, warming perfume. Few shrubs can match its ability to bring colour and scent to the garden during the quietest months of the year, making it a genuinely invaluable addition to any planting scheme.

An upright, vigorous shrub of broadly columnar habit, 'Charles Lamont' is considered one of the finest selections of the Bodnant viburnum group, prized for its particularly deep flower colouring and reliable, prolific display. The bronze-tinged young foliage that emerges in spring provides a pleasing follow-on to the winter flowers, and the handsome, dark green leaves contribute good structure to the border through the growing season. Fully hardy and easy to grow, it is a shrub that rewards very little effort with a great deal of seasonal pleasure.

Growing conditions

Position. 'Charles Lamont' thrives in full sun to partial shade. A bright, open position will encourage the strongest flowering and most intense fragrance, though it will grow perfectly well with a few hours of dappled shade each day. Avoid deep shade, which can reduce flower production significantly. A spot with some shelter from the harshest winter winds will help protect the delicate flowers during cold spells, though the plant itself is fully hardy.

Soil. This viburnum is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including loam, clay, and chalk, provided drainage is adequate. It performs best in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil and is equally at home in neutral to mildly alkaline conditions as in slightly acidic ground. Avoid poorly drained or waterlogged positions, which can lead to root problems over time.

Hardiness. Fully hardy throughout the British Isles and most of northern Europe, 'Charles Lamont' requires no winter protection once established. The flowers may be lightly touched by a heavy frost during the coldest periods but will recover readily as temperatures lift, and new buds continue to open in succession throughout the season.

Care

Watering. Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant settle and develop a strong root system. Once established, 'Charles Lamont' is reasonably drought-tolerant, though a thorough soak during extended dry periods in summer will keep it in the best condition and support next winter's flower bud development.

Feeding and mulching. Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and a generous flower display the following winter. A mulch of well-rotted garden compost or bark applied around the base each spring will help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil structure over time. Keep the mulch clear of the main stems to prevent any risk of rot at the base.

Pruning. 'Charles Lamont' requires very little regular pruning and is best left to develop its naturally upright form. If any shaping or thinning is needed, carry it out in early spring immediately after flowering has finished, before new growth gets fully under way. Remove any dead, damaged, or weak stems cleanly at the base. Every few years, cutting out one or two of the oldest stems at ground level will help rejuvenate the plant and encourage vigorous new flowering growth from the base. Avoid heavy pruning late in the season, as this will remove the developing flower buds for the coming winter.

Pests and diseases. 'Charles Lamont' is generally robust and largely trouble-free in the garden. Aphids may occasionally colonise soft new growth in spring and can be controlled by hand or with an insecticidal soap spray. Good air circulation around the plant will help minimise any risk of powdery mildew during warm, dry summers. Overall, it is a reliable and low-maintenance shrub that rarely gives cause for concern.

Garden use and plant combinations

Specimen and border planting. With its upright, statuesque habit and exceptional winter fragrance, 'Charles Lamont' makes a superb specimen shrub and a strong structural presence in a mixed shrub border. Plant it where the flower scent can drift naturally towards the house, a path, or a seating area — even on a cold winter's day, opening a window or stepping outside will be rewarded with its remarkable perfume.

Winter garden schemes. 'Charles Lamont' is a natural partner for other winter-interest plants. Combine it with the vivid stem colour of Cornus alba or Cornus sanguinea cultivars, the golden winter tracery of Hamamelis, and the cool white flowers of Helleborus niger for a border that truly earns its place during the coldest months. Underplant with winter aconites, snowdrops, and early Cyclamen coum for a carpet of colour beneath the fragrant stems.

Year-round structure. Beyond winter, 'Charles Lamont' contributes solid green structure to the border through spring and summer. Its upright form pairs well with mounding or spreading companions such as hardy geraniums, nepeta, or the bold foliage of hostas, which will help fill in at lower levels and create a well-layered planting with interest across all seasons.

Guide to Planting Field-Grown Root Balled Plants

Pros:

  1. Established Roots: Typically stronger, established roots ensure better initial growth.
  2. Immediate Impact: Larger plants provide instant structure and aesthetics.

Cons:

  1. Heavy and Bulky: Can be difficult to transport and plant due to size and weight.
  2. Seasonal Availability: Generally available only in the dormant season (autumn to early spring).

Preparation for Planting:

  1. Unwrap Carefully: Remove any packaging material, but leave the burlap or wire basket on.
  2. Keep plants moist: Plants should be kept moist until the time of planting.

Planting Process:

  1. Dig a Hole: Make a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  2. Position Plant: Place the root ball in the hole, ensuring the top is level with the ground surface.
  3. Do Not Remove Root Sack: Leave the burlap or wire basket around the root ball. It is bio degradable and will rot away naturally.
  4. Backfill: Fill the hole with soil, firming gently around the roots to eliminate air pockets.
  5. Water: Water deeply after planting to settle the soil and avoid wilting.

Possibility of Losses:

  • Initial Shock: Some plants may suffer transplant shock, leading to potential losses.
  • Mitigation: Proper care and consistent watering during the establishment phase can minimise this risk.

Main Causes of Failure:

  1. Improper Planting Depth: Planting too deep or too shallow can stress the roots.
  2. Poor Soil Conditions: Compacted or poorly drained soil can hinder root growth.
  3. Insufficient Watering: Both under-watering and over-watering can lead to plant stress and failure. Strong wind can dry leafy pants.
  4. Pest and Disease: Lack of protection and monitoring can result in damage from pests and diseases.

Tips for Success:

  1. Stake Larger Plants: Support with stakes to prevent wind damage.
  2. Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate temperature.
  3. Regular Monitoring: Check for signs of stress, pests, and disease, and address them promptly.

By following these guidelines and providing consistent aftercare, you can successfully plant and establish field-grown root balled plants in your garden.
