Thymus vulgaris – Classic Culinary Thyme with Fragrant Foliage
Thymus vulgaris, commonly known as Common Thyme, is a traditional evergreen herb prized for its strongly aromatic leaves and wide range of culinary uses. The small grey-green foliage releases a warm, savoury fragrance when brushed or crushed, making it an essential plant for herb gardens.
In summer, clusters of tiny pale pink to lilac flowers appear above the foliage, adding delicate seasonal colour while attracting bees and other pollinators. The neat, bushy habit forms a compact mound that remains attractive throughout the year.
Common thyme is highly versatile and works equally well in herb gardens, sunny borders, gravel gardens, and patio containers. It pairs beautifully with other Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary, sage, and lavender.
Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, Thymus vulgaris is drought tolerant once established and requires very little maintenance. Light trimming after flowering helps maintain a compact shape and encourages fresh growth.
Fragrant, useful, and easy to grow, Common Thyme is a classic garden herb that combines ornamental appeal with everyday culinary value.
