Thuja ‘Brabant’ is a vigorous, upright evergreen conifer prized for its dense, rich green foliage and fast growth. With its elegant, columnar shape and low-maintenance nature, this hardy arborvitae is a top choice for hedging, screening, and structural planting. At 250–300 cm tall, these mature specimens offer immediate impact, creating living walls of greenery in both formal and informal garden settings.
With a naturally dense habit and a rapid growth rate of up to 40 cm per year, Thuja ‘Brabant’ quickly forms an effective screen or windbreak. It’s ideal for creating private outdoor spaces, buffering noise, and providing year-round enclosure.
Unlike some conifers, ‘Brabant’ maintains a vibrant mid-green hue even through the coldest months, ensuring your garden stays fresh and full of life in winter as well as summer.
Tolerant of regular clipping, this thuja responds well to shaping and is perfect for neat formal hedges or more naturalistic plantings. It’s adaptable and thrives in a variety of soil types, including clay and sandy loam.
‘Brabant’ is exceptionally hardy (down to -30°C), making it suitable for exposed or northern gardens. It’s also resistant to urban pollution, salt, and wind, making it ideal for coastal or city landscapes.
The thick evergreen branches offer nesting sites and shelter for birds and beneficial insects, adding quiet life to your garden year-round.
Position: Full sun to partial shade. Ideal for boundaries, paths, or as a living backdrop for beds and borders.
Soil: Grows best in moist, well-drained soil. Tolerant of a wide range, including heavier clays and slightly alkaline soils.
Watering: Keep well-watered during the first year after planting. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during dry periods.
Maintenance:
Trim once or twice a year (early spring and/or late summer) to maintain shape and encourage dense growth.
Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Space plants 60–80 cm apart for a tight, cohesive hedge.
Thuja ‘Brabant’ provides the perfect evergreen backdrop for colourful perennials and shrubs. Pair it with:
Hydrangea arborescens or Spiraea japonica for contrasting flowers,
Cornus alba (Red-twig dogwood) for bold winter stems,
Boxwood (Buxus) or Taxus for structured layering,
Or soft underplanting with grasses like Festuca glauca or Carex.
It also partners beautifully with spring bulbs like Alliums, Daffodils, or Tulips to create seasonal depth in front of the deep green foliage.
Whether used as a formal hedge, a soft green boundary, or a backdrop for mixed plantings, Thuja ‘Brabant’ delivers immediate structure, enduring beauty, and practical benefits — making it an essential element for gardens that demand both form and function.
