Thuja ‘Brabant’ Hedging – 160/180cm Root Ball

Fast-Growing Evergreen Screening with a Soft, Natural Texture

Thuja occidentalis ‘Brabant’ is a popular conifer variety prized for its dense, bushy habit and fresh green foliage. Supplied here at 160/180cm tall in root ball form, these semi-mature plants offer an instant impact—ideal for establishing privacy, shelter, and structure in both domestic gardens and larger landscapes.

A top choice for those seeking an alternative to Leylandii, ‘Brabant’ maintains a neat, upright form while being easier to manage, clip, and maintain. With consistent year-round colour, cold hardiness, and an excellent response to pruning, it is a reliable performer across the UK.

Seasonal Interest

Spring:
New growth emerges in a brighter, almost lime-green hue, adding fresh texture and volume.

Summer:
The foliage deepens to mid-green, forming a lush, full screen with a soft, feathery texture.

Autumn/Winter:
Retains colour well throughout winter, especially in sheltered positions. Offers wind protection and visual coverage when deciduous plants have dropped their leaves.

Key Features

  • Supplied Height: 160–180cm

  • Root Ball: Field-grown, freshly lifted with strong, fibrous roots

  • Growth Rate: Fast – up to 40–60cm per year in ideal conditions

  • Foliage: Soft, aromatic, mid-green sprays

  • Form: Naturally upright and columnar; thickens well with regular clipping

  • Ultimate Height: Up to 5–6m if left untrimmed, but easily maintained at desired height

Ideal For

  • Privacy Screening: Dense foliage creates excellent visual and noise screening

  • Shelter Belts: Protects gardens or buildings from wind and exposure

  • Garden Boundaries: Forms a lush, uniform hedge with year-round interest

  • Low-Maintenance Hedges: Less prone to browning and overgrowth than Leylandii

  • Formal & Informal Planting: Works well clipped or slightly relaxed

Planting & Care

  • Position: Full sun to partial shade

  • Soil: Any fertile, well-drained soil

  • Watering: Water regularly until established, particularly during dry spells

  • Spacing: Plant approx. 60–80cm apart for a thick hedge

  • Maintenance: Clip once or twice a year to maintain height and shape; responds well to trimming

  • Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support vigorous growth

Why Choose Thuja ‘Brabant’ 160/180cm Root Ball?

  • Instant height for fast results in new hedging schemes

  • Dense, evergreen coverage with a softer appearance than Leylandii

  • Hardy, adaptable, and suitable for most UK conditions

  • Excellent response to pruning—keeps neat with regular maintenance

  • Ideal for gardens, rural plots, or commercial screening

Guide to Planting Field-Grown Root Balled Plants

Pros:

  1. Established Roots: Typically stronger, established roots ensure better initial growth.
  2. Immediate Impact: Larger plants provide instant structure and aesthetics.

Cons:

  1. Heavy and Bulky: Can be difficult to transport and plant due to size and weight.
  2. Seasonal Availability: Generally available only in the dormant season (autumn to early spring).

Preparation for Planting:

  1. Unwrap Carefully: Remove any packaging material, but leave the burlap or wire basket on.
  2. Keep plants moist: Plants should be kept moist until the time of planting.

Planting Process:

  1. Dig a Hole: Make a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  2. Position Plant: Place the root ball in the hole, ensuring the top is level with the ground surface.
  3. Do Not Remove Root Sack: Leave the burlap or wire basket around the root ball. It is bio degradable and will rot away naturally.
  4. Backfill: Fill the hole with soil, firming gently around the roots to eliminate air pockets.
  5. Water: Water deeply after planting to settle the soil and avoid wilting.

Possibility of Losses:

  • Initial Shock: Some plants may suffer transplant shock, leading to potential losses.
  • Mitigation: Proper care and consistent watering during the establishment phase can minimise this risk.

Main Causes of Failure:

  1. Improper Planting Depth: Planting too deep or too shallow can stress the roots.
  2. Poor Soil Conditions: Compacted or poorly drained soil can hinder root growth.
  3. Insufficient Watering: Both under-watering and over-watering can lead to plant stress and failure. Strong wind can dry leafy pants.
  4. Pest and Disease: Lack of protection and monitoring can result in damage from pests and diseases.

Tips for Success:

  1. Stake Larger Plants: Support with stakes to prevent wind damage.
  2. Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate temperature.
  3. Regular Monitoring: Check for signs of stress, pests, and disease, and address them promptly.

By following these guidelines and providing consistent aftercare, you can successfully plant and establish field-grown root balled plants in your garden.
