Skimmia japonica 'Pabella' – Compact Evergreen Skimmia with Bold Winter Buds

Skimmia japonica 'Pabella' is a neat, compact evergreen shrub prized for its striking deep red flower buds, which emerge in autumn and persist through winter, providing rich colour and structural interest during the colder months. A reliable and low-maintenance variety, it forms a dense, rounded mound of glossy dark green foliage that looks attractive throughout the year.

As a male variety, 'Pabella' is grown primarily for its spectacular bud display and, when planted near female skimmias, will act as a pollinator to encourage berry production on neighbouring plants. In spring, the buds open to reveal clusters of small, fragrant white flowers that attract early pollinators and add a welcome seasonal scent to the garden.

Hardy, slow-growing, and shade tolerant, Skimmia 'Pabella' is an excellent choice for shaded borders, woodland-style planting schemes, and containers on patios or beside doorways. Its naturally tidy habit requires very little intervention, making it a dependable evergreen for gardens of all sizes.

Seasonal Highlights

Autumn: Deep red flower buds begin to form, adding bold colour as the season turns.
Winter: Rich, jewel-toned buds persist through the coldest months, providing striking long-season interest.
Spring: Buds open into clusters of small, fragrant white flowers, welcoming early pollinators.
Summer: Glossy evergreen foliage maintains a neat, rounded form throughout the warmer months.

Key Features

  • Bold winter buds – Deep red clusters provide months of colour from autumn through spring.

  • Fragrant spring flowers – Small white blooms with a pleasant seasonal scent.

  • Male pollinator – Encourages berry production on nearby female skimmias.

  • Evergreen foliage – Glossy dark green leaves offer year-round structure.

  • Compact & tidy – Naturally rounded habit with minimal maintenance required.

  • Shade tolerant – Thrives in areas where many shrubs struggle.

Perfect For

  • Shaded borders – Brings colour and evergreen structure to darker spots.

  • Winter interest planting – Striking red buds provide seasonal appeal when little else is in flower.

  • Containers – Ideal for patios, entrances, and courtyards.

  • Woodland gardens – Pairs beautifully with ferns, hellebores, and hostas.

  • Mixed skimmia planting – Plant alongside female varieties to encourage berrying.

Growing Conditions & Care

Position: Partial to full shade; sheltered from harsh winds and strong direct sun, which can scorch the foliage.

Soil: Moist, humus-rich, well-drained, and slightly acidic soil. Avoid waterlogged or chalky conditions.

Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK, tolerating temperatures well below freezing.

Care: Very low maintenance. Mulch annually with leaf mould or composted bark to retain moisture and feed the roots. Water during prolonged dry spells, particularly in containers. Pruning is rarely necessary — trim lightly after flowering if needed to maintain shape.

Looks Great With

  • Female skimmias – Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' or 'Veitchii' for berry production.

  • Shade evergreens – Sarcococca, Fatsia japonica, Euonymus.

  • Ferns – Dryopteris, Polystichum, Athyrium.

  • Winter and spring interest plants – Hellebores, Viburnum tinus, snowdrops.
