Santolina chamaecyparissus – Lavender Cotton for Silver Foliage and Summer Colour

Santolina chamaecyparissus, commonly known as Lavender Cotton, is a charming evergreen shrub prized for its finely divided silver-grey foliage and cheerful yellow summer flowers. Its compact, rounded habit and aromatic leaves make it a valuable plant for adding year-round structure, colour, and texture to the garden.

The soft silvery foliage creates a beautiful contrast against green-leaved plants and flowering perennials, while the bright yellow button-like flowers rise above the foliage during summer, bringing a burst of colour and attracting pollinating insects.

Perfect for Mediterranean-style planting, gravel gardens, knot gardens, and low hedging, Santolina thrives in hot, sunny positions where many other plants struggle. Its drought tolerance and neat growth habit make it particularly useful in low-maintenance planting schemes.

The aromatic foliage releases a pleasant fragrance when brushed or clipped, adding an extra sensory dimension to the garden. Regular light trimming helps maintain its tidy, compact shape and encourages fresh silvery growth.

Thriving in full sun and free-draining soil, Santolina performs best in dry conditions and dislikes waterlogged ground, especially during winter.

Elegant, resilient, and easy to grow, Santolina chamaecyparissus is an excellent choice for adding silver foliage and Mediterranean character to the garden.
