Sambucus nigra 'Black Beauty'
Common name: Black Elder
A dramatic deciduous shrub with rich, dark purple-black foliage and stunning contrast. In early summer, large, flat clusters of fragrant, pale pink flowers appear, standing out beautifully against the dark leaves. These are followed by glossy black berries in autumn, which are attractive to birds and can be used to make jams, jellies, or wine.
‘Black Beauty’ offers all-season interest and works well in both traditional and modern gardens. It can be grown as a shrub or small tree and is easy to maintain. Pruning in early spring keeps it more compact and encourages fresh, vivid foliage.
Thrives in full sun for the richest leaf colour, though it will tolerate light shade. Grows in most moist but well-drained soils and is fully hardy throughout the UK.
