Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace'
Common name: Elder or Black Elder
A striking deciduous shrub with deeply cut, lacy dark purple-black foliage that gives a dramatic, almost Japanese maple-like effect. In early summer, flat clusters of fragrant, pale pink flowers contrast beautifully against the dark leaves, followed by glossy black elderberries in autumn, which are attractive to birds and can be used for jams and cordials.
'Black Lace' is a bold yet easy-to-grow choice for mixed borders, wildlife gardens, or contemporary planting schemes. It can also be pruned hard in spring to keep it compact and encourage fresh, richly coloured foliage.
Thrives in full sun for the darkest leaf colour, but will also tolerate light shade. Grows well in most moist but well-drained soils and is fully hardy across the UK.
Ultimate height and spread:
3–4m high × 2–3m wide in 5–10 years (smaller if pruned annually)
Position: Full sun or light shade
Soil type: Moist but well-drained, fertile
Suitable for: Borders, wildlife planting, ornamental foliage, pollinator gardens, edible gardens
Does the height include the pot?
No, we measure from the top of the pot to the tip of the plant except for some of the instant planted screens, in this case it will be stated in the description
