Salvia ‘May Night’

Deep Violet Spires for Bold Early Summer Colour

Salvia ‘May Night’ is a hardy, long-flowering perennial prized for its intensely rich violet-purple flower spikes that rise above neat clumps of aromatic, textured foliage. One of the earliest salvias to bloom, it offers a bold burst of colour from late spring well into summer, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to the garden.

Compact yet striking, ‘May Night’ brings dramatic contrast and structure to mixed borders, gravel gardens, and wildlife-friendly planting schemes. Its upright habit and repeated blooming make it a reliable favourite for gardeners seeking low-maintenance impact with high reward.

Seasonal Interest & Growth

  • Spring: Fresh basal growth emerges in early spring, forming mounds of fragrant, grey-green leaves.

  • Early Summer: Deep violet flower spikes begin to bloom, often as early as May, living up to the name.

  • Mid to Late Summer: Regular deadheading encourages continued flowering into mid to late summer.

  • Autumn: Foliage remains tidy, and seed heads can be left for winter interest or cut back for neatness.

  • Winter: Deciduous; the plant dies back to the ground and re-emerges in spring.

Structure & Form

  • Height: 40–50 cm

  • Spread: 30–40 cm

  • Habit: Upright, clump-forming

  • Foliage: Narrow, textured, grey-green leaves with a subtle herbal scent

  • Flowers: Dense spikes of deep violet-purple blooms

  • Growth Rate: Moderate; quick to establish and flower

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Full sun for best flowering and compact growth

  • Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil – drought-tolerant once established

  • Hardiness: RHS H7 – very hardy in all parts of the UK

  • Watering: Water well during dry spells until established; avoid waterlogged conditions

  • Maintenance: Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering. Cut back spent stems in autumn or early spring.

Why Choose Salvia ‘May Night’?

  • Early and extended flowering season – from May into late summer

  • Intense violet blooms contrast beautifully with other perennials and grasses

  • Pollinator magnet – ideal for bee and butterfly-friendly gardens

  • Drought-tolerant and low-maintenance once established

  • Compact size suits borders, raised beds, and containers

Perfect Plant Combinations

  • With Achillea or Coreopsis: For a hot colour scheme with complementary textures

  • With Nepeta or Geraniums: Softens the deep purple spikes with blue and pastel tones

  • With Ornamental Grasses: Creates movement and contrast in sunny borders

  • With Lavender or Echinacea: Builds a wildlife-friendly, drought-tolerant planting palette

Salvia ‘May Night’ is a must-have perennial for bold, early-season colour. Its vivid violet spikes, pollinator-friendly nature, and easy-care habit make it a brilliant addition to any sunny, well-drained garden.
