Prunus 'Kanzan', also known as the Japanese flowering cherry 'Kanzan', is one of the most popular and striking ornamental cherry trees It's renowned for its spectacular display of double pink flowers in spring and its vibrant autumn foliage. This tree is widely planted in gardens, parks, and along streets because of its showy blossoms and relatively easy maintenance.
Prunus Kanzan prefers full sun for the best flowering performance. It thrives in sunny positions. Grows well in well-drained soils but is adaptable to different types, including loamy, clay, or sandy soils. The tree prefers neutral to slightly acidic soil but can tolerate alkaline conditions. It’s important to avoid waterlogged soils, as cherry trees are susceptible to root rot in poorly drained conditions. It requires minimal pruning, usually just to remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Prune in summer after flowering to avoid issues like silver leaf disease, which is more likely if pruned in winter.
