Philadelphus ‘Belle Étoile’ – Fragrant Mock Orange with Purple-Centred Flowers
Philadelphus ‘Belle Étoile’ is a beautifully scented mock orange, valued for its elegant flowers and compact, manageable growth. In early summer, the shrub becomes covered with delicate white blooms, each marked with a distinctive deep purple centre that adds striking contrast.
The flowers release a rich, sweet fragrance reminiscent of orange blossom, filling the garden with scent during the flowering season. This makes ‘Belle Étoile’ particularly well suited to planting near patios, pathways, or seating areas where its perfume can be fully enjoyed.
Its naturally arching branches and fresh green foliage create a soft, graceful shape that works wonderfully in mixed borders and cottage-style gardens. The compact size also makes it ideal for smaller gardens where larger mock oranges might be too vigorous.
Hardy and easy to grow, Philadelphus ‘Belle Étoile’ thrives in full sun or partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain its shape and encourages strong growth for the following year.
Elegant, fragrant, and full of charm, ‘Belle Étoile’ is one of the most popular mock oranges for bringing both beauty and perfume to summer gardens.
