Parrotia persica – The Persian Ironwood: A Four-Season Masterpiece

Parrotia persica, known as the Persian Ironwood, is a refined small tree or large shrub that offers beauty in every season. In late winter, before the leaves emerge, it produces clusters of tiny, deep red flowers – a subtle yet charming display that hints at the year’s pleasures to come.

As spring arrives, the tree unfurls fresh, rich green leaves, creating a dense canopy that provides cool shade through summer. Then, in autumn, the real show begins: foliage transforms into a kaleidoscope of crimson, orange, yellow, and purple, rivaling even the best Japanese maples for seasonal impact.

In winter, after the leaves have fallen, the architectural form of the tree is revealed, with its attractive, peeling bark in mottled shades of grey, cream, and brown – adding texture and interest even on the coldest days.

Why Grow Parrotia persica?

  • Exceptional Autumn Colour – A rich blend of reds, oranges, and golds.

  • All-Season Appeal – Flowers, foliage, and bark provide year-round beauty.

  • Low Maintenance – Hardy, disease-resistant, and easy to grow.

  • Compact Size – Perfect for smaller gardens and feature planting.

  • Wildlife Friendly – Flowers attract early pollinators.

Planting & Care Guide

Position: Full sun or light shade; autumn colour is best in full sun.

Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil; tolerates a range from neutral to slightly acidic.

Watering: Water regularly in the first year; drought-tolerant once established.

Feeding: Not usually necessary; a mulch of compost in spring will promote healthy growth.

Pruning: Minimal – prune lightly in late winter if needed to shape or remove dead wood.

Design & Planting Ideas

  • Use as a specimen tree in lawns or front gardens.

  • Plant in mixed borders with shrubs and perennials for seasonal layering.

  • Combine with ornamental grasses and conifers for winter interest.

  • Position near a seating area to enjoy the seasonal changes up close.

Parrotia persica is the ultimate choice for gardeners seeking a tree with elegance, structure, and an ever-changing palette. A true all-rounder, it brings subtle charm and seasonal drama in equal measure.
