Panicum virgatum ‘Squaw’

A Graceful Switchgrass with Fiery Autumn Colour

Panicum virgatum ‘Squaw’ is a striking ornamental grass that brings height, movement, and seasonal drama to garden borders and prairie-style plantings. This compact switchgrass forms upright, clump-forming foliage that starts green in spring and deepens to red and burgundy tones by late summer and autumn. In midsummer, it sends up airy clouds of reddish flower panicles that age to soft tan, adding a light, elegant texture.

Renowned for its sturdy, upright habit, ‘Squaw’ stands strong through wind and weather, offering architectural value well into winter. It is drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and thrives in a wide range of soils, making it ideal for modern and naturalistic landscapes alike.
