Olea europaea – Classic Olive Tree with Mediterranean Character
Olea europaea, the traditional olive tree, is a timeless and architectural evergreen that brings a distinct Mediterranean feel to UK gardens. With its narrow, silvery-green leaves and naturally gnarled, characterful trunk, it offers year-round structure and understated elegance.
The foliage has a soft, shimmering quality, reflecting light beautifully and creating contrast against darker planting. Over time, the tree develops a sculptural form, with twisted stems and a broad, airy canopy that adds both height and presence without feeling heavy.
In warm summers, small creamy-white flowers may appear, sometimes followed by olives in particularly favourable conditions. While fruiting is not guaranteed in the UK climate, the ornamental value of the tree remains its main appeal.
Perfect for patios, courtyards, and formal planting schemes, Olea europaea is especially well suited to container growing, where it can be positioned as a focal point. It also works beautifully in gravel gardens or paired with other drought-tolerant, Mediterranean-style plants.
Thriving in a sunny, sheltered position, it prefers free-draining soil and benefits from protection against cold winds and excessive winter wet. Once established, it is notably drought tolerant and requires minimal maintenance beyond occasional shaping.
Elegant, resilient, and full of character, the olive tree is an enduring favourite for creating a relaxed, sun-soaked garden atmosphere.
