Versatile & Architectural

How to Grow Olea europaea (Olive Tree)
Position:
Best in full sun and a sheltered spot, ideally south- or west-facing. Protect from cold, drying winds in winter.
Soil:
Thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. In containers, use a loam-based compost with added grit for excellent drainage.
Watering:
Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the top of the soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
Pruning:
Prune lightly in late spring or early summer to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth.
Growth Habit:
A slow-growing evergreen tree with a rounded crown and gnarled trunk. Mature specimens can live for centuries and develop even more character with age.
Hardiness:
Hardy in most UK regions with some winter protection in colder areas. Container-grown trees can be moved to sheltered spots or wrapped in severe frost.
Design Ideas
Use as a focal point in large containers on patios, courtyards, or terraces.
Plant in pairs to frame doorways, gateways, or garden entrances.
Incorporate into Mediterranean-style gardens with lavender, rosemary, and terracotta for a classic look.
Combine with modern hard landscaping for a striking architectural statement.
