Nyssa sylvatica ‘Wildfire’ – Fiery Spring Flush & Glorious Autumn Colour
Nyssa sylvatica ‘Wildfire’, commonly known as Black Gum or Tupelo, is a truly breathtaking ornamental tree, offering a double season of colour. In spring, fresh leaves emerge in a brilliant, flame-red flush before maturing to rich, glossy green for summer. As the year draws to a close, it delivers one of the most spectacular autumn displays in the garden, with shades of crimson, orange, and gold dancing across the canopy.
This elegant, upright tree has a naturally symmetrical habit, making it a superb choice for formal planting or as a standalone focal point in lawns, large borders, or parkland settings. With an ultimate height of around 8–12 metres, it’s suited to medium and larger gardens, where its seasonal drama can be fully appreciated.
Thriving in moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil, and happiest in full sun or light dappled shade, ‘Wildfire’ is as tough as it is beautiful, being hardy across the UK.
