A compact and beautifully upright ornamental grass, Molinia caerulea 'Moorhexe' — commonly known as Purple Moor Grass — brings elegant, season-long interest to borders and naturalistic planting schemes. From summer through to autumn, slender purple-tinted flower stems rise stiffly above neat, arching foliage, creating an airy, almost luminous effect when backlit by low sun. As the season turns, the whole plant transforms to warm shades of gold and amber before dying back gracefully in winter.

Habit & Appearance

Neat, upright, and full of seasonal drama. 'Moorhexe' forms a tight, well-behaved clump of narrow, dark green leaves that remain tidy throughout the growing season. In summer, delicate purple-flushed flower spikes emerge on stiff, upright stems, giving a hazy, almost ethereal quality to the planting. Come autumn, the foliage and stems shift to rich golden-yellow tones before the whole plant collapses cleanly, leaving little mess behind. Its restrained, compact habit makes it an excellent choice where space is limited or a more refined grass is needed.

Growing Conditions

Thrives in open, sunny positions. Purple Moor Grass performs best in full sun, which encourages the best foliage colour, flowering, and those spectacular autumn tints. It tolerates partial shade but may become less upright and flower less freely. As its name suggests, it is naturally at home on moorland and boggy ground, so it copes well with moisture-retentive soils and even periodic waterlogging — making it a useful choice for damp borders or rain gardens. It grows well in a wide range of soils, from peaty to clay, and does not require particularly fertile conditions.

Care & Pruning

Low maintenance and easy to manage. One of the great virtues of Molinia is that it is a deciduous grass, meaning the old foliage and stems can be cleared away cleanly in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Simply cut or pull the dead material away at the base — there is rarely any woody residue or tangled thatch to deal with. There is no need to divide clumps frequently, though dividing every few years in spring will keep plants vigorous. No feeding is generally required, and once established, 'Moorhexe' is reliably hardy and largely trouble-free throughout the UK.
