Molinia caerulea 'Heidebraut' is a graceful variety of purple moor grass prized for its airy, upright habit and outstanding seasonal interest. From summer through to autumn, slender stems rise above the neat mounds of foliage to carry delicate, purple-tinged flower spikes that catch the light beautifully, swaying and shimmering in the slightest breeze. As the season progresses, the whole plant transitions through warm shades of gold and amber, making it a standout choice for naturalistic planting schemes and prairie-style borders alike.

Habit & Appearance

Elegant, upright and season-long. 'Heidebraut' — meaning 'Heath Bride' — forms a tidy, arching clump of narrow green foliage from which tall, wispy flowering stems emerge in mid to late summer. The fine panicles carry a soft purple hue and create a wonderful haze of movement and texture. Come autumn, the foliage and stems turn rich golden-yellow before dying back cleanly for winter, giving months of evolving colour and form in the garden.

Growing Conditions

Best in an open, sunny spot. Purple moor grass thrives in full sun to light partial shade and is ideally suited to moist, acidic or neutral soils. As its common name suggests, it is naturally found on heathland and moorland, so it performs particularly well in conditions that would challenge many other ornamental grasses. It tolerates poor, low-fertility soils and even periods of waterlogging, making it a versatile choice for challenging spots in the garden.

Avoid rich or heavy clay soils where possible. While adaptable, 'Heidebraut' can become lax and overly lush in very fertile conditions. A leaner, free-draining yet moisture-retentive soil will encourage the most upright and attractive habit.

Care & Pruning

Low maintenance once established. Purple moor grass is a deciduous grass, dying back fully over winter. The faded stems and foliage can be left in place through the colder months to provide structure and interest, as well as shelter for overwintering wildlife. Cut back the old growth to near ground level in late winter or early spring, before new shoots begin to emerge.

Little feeding is needed. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can promote soft, floppy growth at the expense of the characteristic upright form. Watering during dry spells in the first season after planting will help the plant establish well, after which it becomes largely self-sufficient.
