Magnolia Susan

Magnolia ‘Susan’ – Compact Beauty with Striking Spring Blooms

Magnolia ‘Susan’ is a charming, small deciduous shrub or compact tree celebrated for its upright form and richly coloured spring flowers. Ideal for smaller gardens, patios, or mixed borders, offering bold seasonal colour and a refined presence with minimal space requirements.

Seasonal Beauty & Colour

  • Spring: Deep reddish-purple buds open into slender, tulip-shaped blooms with slightly twisted petals—flowering later than many magnolias, helping avoid frost damage.
  • Summer: Lush, ovate green leaves fill the rounded canopy, adding a fresh, vibrant backdrop.
  • Autumn: Foliage may take on golden tones before falling, providing subtle seasonal change.
  • Winter: Bare stems form a neat silhouette, while flower buds hint at spring’s return.

Structure & Growth

  • Height & Spread: Reaches 2.5–4 metres tall and wide, perfect for compact spaces.
  • Growth Habit: Upright and bushy with a naturally rounded form.
  • Flowers: Fragrant, deep red-purple blooms measuring up to 10–15cm across, appearing before foliage for maximum visual impact.

Perfect For

  • Small Gardens & Courtyards – Ideal for limited spaces without compromising beauty.
  • Borders & Mixed Beds – Adds seasonal drama to planting schemes.
  • Containers – Thrives in large pots with good drainage.
  • Frost-Prone Areas – Later flowering reduces risk of bud damage.

Planting & Care

  • Position: Prefers full sun or partial shade; a sheltered position enhances flowering.
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil. Avoid alkaline (chalky) soils.
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK with good resilience to frost.
  • Maintenance: Minimal pruning needed—just remove dead or damaged branches after flowering. Mulch annually.

Why Choose Magnolia ‘Susan’?

  • Compact size fits modern gardens and patios
  • Stunning, fragrant blooms in rich purple-pink tones
  • Late flowering reduces risk of frost damage
  • Easy to care for and low maintenance

Great Companion Plants

  • Pair with spring bulbs – like Narcissus or Muscari
  • Underplant with groundcovers – like Heuchera or Brunnera
  • Mix with flowering shrubs – such as Rhododendrons or Pieris
  • Frame with evergreens – for year-round contrast and shelter

Magnolia ‘Susan’ delivers vivid spring colour and elegant form in a space-saving size. Whether grown in the ground or a large container, this magnolia offers long-lasting beauty and reliable charm for gardeners of all levels.
