Why Grow Liquidambar styraciflua 'Worplesdon'?
Brilliant Fall Foliage – One of the most notable features of 'Worplesdon' is its incredible fall colour. The leaves turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a stunning visual display that lasts for weeks, making this tree a highlight of the autumn season.
Upright, Columnar Growth – With its narrow, upright form, 'Worplesdon' is an ideal choice for small gardens, urban areas, or as a vertical accent in larger landscapes. Its compact, columnar growth provides height and structure without taking up too much space.
Attractive Green Foliage – In spring and summer, the tree features glossy, dark green leaves that provide a lush, dense canopy. This provides excellent shade and a refreshing backdrop to other plants, making it a versatile addition to garden design.
Year-Round Interest – Beyond its stunning autumn foliage, 'Worplesdon' offers interest throughout the year. Its unique star-shaped leaves remain attractive during the growing season, and its smooth, grey bark adds texture and contrast during the winter months.
Planting & Care Guide
Position: Prefers full sun to partial shade. It thrives best in sunny locations where it can produce the most vibrant fall colours, although it can tolerate some light shade, especially in warmer climates.
Soil: Best planted in moist, well-drained, fertile soil. It is adaptable to various soil types, from slightly acidic to neutral, and can tolerate both clay and loamy soil as long as it drains well.
Watering: Water regularly, particularly during dry periods or when newly planted. Once established, 'Worplesdon' is relatively drought-tolerant but will benefit from consistent moisture to encourage healthy growth and vibrant autumn colour.
Maintenance:
Pruning is minimal, but occasional shaping or removing dead or damaged wood can be done in late winter or early spring to maintain a tidy appearance. This helps the tree grow in its upright, columnar form.
Mulching around the base of the tree helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. It also provides winter protection for the root system in colder climates.
Fertilizing is not typically necessary, but using a balanced fertilizer in early spring can support healthy growth and improve the overall appearance of the tree, especially if the soil is nutrient-poor.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Liquidambar styraciflua 'Worplesdon' pairs beautifully with other deciduous trees that also offer seasonal colour, such as Acer (Maple), Betula (Birch), or Fagus (Beech), to create a dynamic and ever-changing landscape throughout the year. For an eye-catching contrast, combine with evergreen shrubs like Boxwood or Yew, which will highlight the tree’s striking form and colourful foliage. In addition, 'Worplesdon' works well in woodland gardens or as a focal point in larger garden beds, where its upright growth can provide contrast against lower-growing perennials or groundcovers such as Hostas, Ferns, or Heuchera.
