Lavandula angustifolia – Classic English Lavender for Fragrance and Summer Colour
Lavandula angustifolia, commonly known as English lavender, is a timeless garden favourite, prized for its fragrant flowers, soft grey-green foliage, and versatility in both formal and informal planting schemes. Its neat, bushy habit makes it perfect for edging, low hedging, and adding structure to sunny borders.
From early to midsummer, slender stems rise above the foliage, carrying spikes of richly scented purple flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The blooms are ideal for cutting, drying, or simply enjoying in the garden, where their calming fragrance enhances outdoor spaces.
The evergreen foliage provides year-round interest, forming a tidy mound that works beautifully in Mediterranean-style planting, gravel gardens, and containers. Highly tolerant of dry conditions once established, lavender thrives in full sun and free-draining soil, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance gardening.
Regular light pruning after flowering helps maintain its compact shape and encourages repeat blooming in some conditions.
Elegant, fragrant, and easy to grow, Lavandula angustifolia is an essential plant for adding colour, scent, and wildlife appeal to the garden.
