Planting & Care Guide
Position: Prefers full sun to partial shade. For the best golden color, plant in a sunny location where it will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. It can tolerate partial shade but may not produce as vibrant a golden hue.
Soil: Best planted in well-drained soil. Juniperus media 'Gold Star' is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including sandy or loamy soil, as long as it has good drainage. It does not perform well in waterlogged soil.
Watering: Water regularly when newly planted to establish the root system. Once established, this juniper is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. It will benefit from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods.
Maintenance:
Pruning is generally minimal but can be done in early spring to shape the plant or remove any dead or damaged branches. Light trimming helps maintain its compact form.
Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture, keep the soil temperature stable, and prevent weed growth. Apply mulch in early spring or fall for added protection.
Fertilizing is generally not necessary, but a light application of balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring can promote healthy growth, especially if the plant is in nutrient-poor soil.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Juniperus media 'Gold Star' pairs beautifully with other low-growing, drought-tolerant plants like Sedum (Stonecrop) or Thymus (Thyme), where its golden foliage complements the colorful blooms and textures of these hardy perennials. It also looks stunning alongside darker green plants, such as Lavandula (Lavender) or Helleborus (Hellebore), where the contrast between golden and green creates a striking visual effect. For a more dramatic contrast, combine with plants that have purple or blue foliage, such as Echinacea (Coneflower) or Salvia, to create a vibrant, multi-colored display. This juniper is also well-suited for rock gardens, where its spreading habit softens the edges of stonework and adds year-round color.
