Heucherella ‘Art Nouveau’ – A Lush, Colourful Gem for Shady Gardens
Heucherella ‘Art Nouveau’ is a vibrant and eye-catching perennial that offers an exquisite blend of foliage colour and texture, perfect for adding richness to shaded or partially shaded garden spaces. With its striking, deeply lobed leaves in a blend of lime green and yellow with hints of red veins, this variety creates a beautiful contrast against darker plants and flowers. Throughout the season, its foliage evolves, becoming more dramatic as the cooler months approach. In late spring to early summer, delicate spikes of creamy white flowers emerge, adding a touch of airy elegance to its vibrant leaves. This versatile and low-maintenance beauty is perfect for borders, containers, or woodland gardens.
Why Grow Heucherella ‘Art Nouveau’?
Stunning Colouration – The lime green and yellow foliage, adorned with red veins, creates a vivid contrast in the garden, bringing a lively splash of colour even in shady spots.
Compact & Neat Growth – Forms a tidy, mound-like clump, ideal for smaller spaces, mixed borders, or containers, without becoming too invasive.
Seasonal Interest – The leaves evolve over time, with the colours deepening and becoming more intense as the temperature cools, providing long-lasting visual appeal.
Pollinator-Friendly – The delicate white flowers, borne on tall, airy stems, attract bees and butterflies, adding a pollinator-friendly touch to your garden.
Hardy & Low-Maintenance – Fully hardy in the UK, this Heucherella variety is resistant to pests and diseases, drought-tolerant once established, and requires minimal care.
Planting & Care Guide
Position: Prefers partial to full shade, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shady borders, or containers in low-light areas.
Soil: Thrives in well-drained, moist soil, but is adaptable to a range of conditions, from slightly acidic to neutral.
Watering: Water regularly when newly planted, but once established, Heucherella ‘Art Nouveau’ is relatively drought-tolerant and requires little watering.
Maintenance:
- Remove any old or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking fresh and tidy.
- Cut back the flower spikes after blooming to maintain a neat appearance.
- Divide clumps every few years to encourage vigour and prevent overcrowding.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Heucherella ‘Art Nouveau’ pairs beautifully with ferns, hostas, astilbes, or columbines, where its bright foliage adds a pop of colour against the softer greens of surrounding plants. It also complements dark-leaved varieties like Heuchera ‘Dark Secrets’ or Heuchera ‘Obsidian,’ providing a radiant contrast. Excellent for woodland gardens, shady borders, or as a striking addition to containers, this variety will bring both beauty and structure to any planting scheme.
