Gaura ‘Pink’ – Airy Grace with Clouds of Dancing Blush Blooms

Gaura ‘Pink’ is a delicate, long-flowering perennial admired for its masses of soft pink, butterfly-like flowers that flutter on tall, wiry stems from late spring to autumn. With a naturally airy and informal form, Gaura adds movement and texture to garden borders, containers, and wildlife-friendly spaces. Its graceful appearance and drought-tolerant nature make it a low-maintenance favourite for modern and cottage-style gardens alike.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

Spring:
New growth forms a neat clump of slender, lance-shaped green leaves, preparing for the long flowering season ahead.

Summer:
From late spring into early autumn, tall, slender stems rise above the foliage, bearing delicate pink blooms that resemble tiny butterflies in flight. The flowers open in succession, creating a cloud-like, ethereal display that lasts for months.

Autumn:
Blooms persist into early autumn, fading to pale tones as cooler temperatures set in. The foliage may develop reddish tones, adding subtle seasonal interest.

Winter:
In colder climates, Gaura dies back to the crown. In milder areas, it may retain a basal rosette of foliage. Cut back in late winter or early spring to promote fresh new growth.

Structure & Form

  • Height: 60–90 cm

  • Spread: 40–60 cm

  • Habit: Bushy, upright with a loose, airy form

  • Foliage: Narrow, lance-shaped green leaves; may flush red in autumn

  • Flowers: Small, star-shaped pink blooms with long stamens; held on wiry stems above the foliage

  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast

  • Lifespan: Perennial; short-lived but readily self-seeds in ideal conditions

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Mixed & Perennial Borders: Adds height, movement, and softness between more solid plants.

  • Cottage Gardens: Perfect for relaxed, informal planting schemes.

  • Gravel & Prairie-Style Gardens: Its drought tolerance and natural look make it ideal for xeriscaping and naturalistic designs.

  • Containers: Thrives in large pots where its airy form can spill and sway.

  • Pollinator Gardens: Loved by bees and butterflies for its long blooming season.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Full sun is essential for best flowering and compact growth.

  • Soil: Well-drained, light or sandy soil; tolerates poor soils but dislikes heavy clay.

  • Watering: Drought-tolerant once established. Water during prolonged dry spells in the first season.

  • Hardiness: Hardy in milder parts of the UK (H4); may require protection or mulching in exposed or very cold areas.

  • Maintenance: Low. Cut back spent flower stems and tidy the plant after flowering. Trim hard in spring to encourage fresh new growth.

Why Choose Gaura ‘Pink’?

  • Long Bloom Season: Flowers continuously from late spring to early autumn.

  • Graceful Movement: Light, airy stems sway gently in the breeze for a soft, romantic effect.

  • Low Maintenance: Thrives in sunny spots with minimal watering or care.

  • Pollinator Friendly: Provides nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

  • Elegant Form: Adds vertical interest and a touch of wild beauty to any planting scheme.

Perfect Plant Combinations

  • With Ornamental Grasses: Pair with Pennisetum, Stipa tenuissima, or Miscanthus for a dreamy, naturalistic look.

  • With Lavender or Salvia: Create a sun-loving, pollinator-friendly display with purple-toned perennials.

  • With Coreopsis & Rudbeckia: Combine for a lively, long-lasting summer border with bold colour contrast.

  • With Sedum & Echinacea: Add seasonal structure and textural interest from mid- to late-summer.

Gaura ‘Pink’ brings a touch of elegance, softness, and movement to the garden with almost no effort. Whether swaying gently in a border, spilling from a container, or filling gaps in a wildflower patch, its light-hearted beauty and carefree growth habit make it a wonderful choice for modern or informal planting schemes.
