Feijoa sellowiana (Pineapple Guava)
Exotic, evergreen, and surprisingly hardy, Feijoa sellowiana is a versatile shrub or small tree grown for its striking flowers, edible fruit, and handsome foliage. The leaves are silvery-green above and softly felted beneath, creating a refined, Mediterranean look that shines all year.
In early summer, it produces extraordinary flowers with white petals flushed pink and crowned with a cluster of vivid red stamens. These blooms are not only decorative but also edible, with a sweet, perfumed taste. Later in the season, if conditions are right, the plant bears delicious guava-like fruits with aromatic, pineapple-flavoured flesh.
Hardy in much of the UK (down to around –10°C), Feijoa thrives best in a sunny, sheltered spot and makes a superb choice for borders, warm walls, or large containers. Its combination of ornamental beauty and edible harvest makes it an excellent feature for both decorative and productive gardens.
