Fagus sylvatica 'Tricolor' – Ornamental Beech with Pink-Margined Foliage

Fagus sylvatica 'Tricolor' is a highly decorative form of the European beech, celebrated for its variegated foliage of purple leaves edged with pink and cream. Compact and slow-growing compared to the species, it is an exceptional specimen tree that adds colour, elegance, and texture to gardens.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: New leaves unfurl purple with bright pink and cream margins, creating a dazzling display.

  • Summer: Foliage matures to deep purple with variegated edging, maintaining vibrancy through the season.

  • Autumn: Leaves turn rich copper and golden-brown before falling.

  • Winter: Smooth grey bark and branching structure provide stately winter form.

Key Features

  • Unique foliage – Purple leaves edged in pink and cream create a striking, multicoloured effect.

  • Compact habit – Slower growing and smaller than the common beech, ideal for modest gardens.

  • Seasonal beauty – Colourful spring and summer foliage with warm autumn tones.

  • Elegant structure – Graceful canopy and smooth grey bark add year-round charm.

  • Hardy and reliable – Thrives in UK gardens with minimal maintenance.

Perfect For

  • Specimen planting – A colourful focal point in lawns or borders.

  • Small to medium gardens – Slower growth makes it more manageable.

  • Mixed planting schemes – Combines beautifully with green or golden foliage.

  • Formal settings – Adds refinement to structured gardens or avenues.

Growing Tips

  • Sun/Position: Best in full sun to partial shade. Too much shade reduces leaf variegation.

  • Soil: Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil; avoid waterlogged or very dry conditions.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK.

  • Care: Minimal pruning needed; trim lightly in late summer to maintain form. Water during prolonged dry spells when young.

Looks Great With

  • Green-leaved trees – Such as hornbeam or lime, for contrast.

  • Golden foliage – Pair with Acer ‘Princeton Gold’ or Gleditsia ‘Sunburst’.

  • Evergreens – Yew or Box provide a strong backdrop for its variegated leaves.

  • Spring bulbs – Daffodils and Tulips at the base enhance seasonal colour.

Fagus sylvatica 'Tricolor' is an outstanding ornamental beech that offers multi-toned foliage, seasonal drama, and refined structure. Compact, hardy, and elegant, it’s a superb choice for gardeners looking for something truly distinctive.
