Planting & Care Guide
Position – Escallonia macrantha thrives in full sun to partial shade. It will bloom most profusely in a sunny location, though it can tolerate light shade, especially in hot climates where afternoon sun may be too intense.
Soil – Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Escallonia macrantha is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and slightly acidic soils, but will perform best in soil that is slightly acidic to neutral.
Watering – Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, Escallonia macrantha is moderately drought-tolerant and requires little watering, though it will benefit from occasional watering during dry periods.
Maintenance:
-
Pruning – Prune after flowering to maintain a tidy shape and encourage dense growth. Remove any dead or damaged wood and trim back any wayward branches to promote healthy, new growth.
-
Mulching – Apply mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the roots cool during the warmer months.
-
Fertilizing – Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth and abundant blooms throughout the flowering season.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Escallonia macrantha pairs wonderfully with other summer-blooming plants like Geraniums, Penstemon, Lavender, or Coreopsis, creating a vibrant and colourful garden display. The bold red-pink flowers contrast beautifully with other plants that feature lighter or silvery foliage, such as Santolina, Artemisia, or Lavender. It also works well with other evergreen shrubs such as Hebe, Pieris, and Boxwood, adding year-round interest and structure to the garden. For a more naturalistic look, combine 'macrantha' with ornamental grasses like Festuca or Pennisetum, which enhance its bushy form and add movement to the garden. Ideal for hedging, Escallonia macrantha also makes a striking feature plant or screen for larger gardens, providing both beauty and privacy throughout the year.
