Why Grow Eryngium ‘Big Blue’?
Vibrant, Electric Blue Flowers – Deep blue, thistle-like blooms stand out brilliantly, intensifying in colour as they mature.
Architectural & Textured Foliage – Glossy, spiny green leaves form a compact, upright clump, providing year-round interest.
Thrives in Full Sun – Ideal for dry, well-drained areas, making it perfect for Mediterranean-style gardens, wildlife-friendly spaces, and gravel borders.
Loved by Pollinators – A magnet for bees and butterflies, supporting biodiversity in your garden.
Drought-Tolerant & Hardy – Fully hardy in the UK, once established it requires little watering and thrives in poor, dry soils.
Planting & Care Guide
Position: Prefers full sun, ideally in an open, airy position.
Soil: Best in well-drained, sandy, or rocky soil—avoid overly rich or heavy clay soils.
Watering: Drought-tolerant once established; only requires occasional watering in prolonged dry spells.
Maintenance:
- Leave flower heads for winter interest and to attract wildlife.
- Cut back faded stems in early spring to encourage fresh growth.
- Avoid excessive fertilization, as it can lead to weak, floppy growth.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Eryngium ‘Big Blue’ pairs beautifully with grasses, lavender, echinacea, and rudbeckia, creating a naturalistic, wildflower meadow effect. It also makes an excellent dried flower, holding its stunning colour long after cutting.
