Elaeagnus × ebbingei 'Compacta' – Compact Ebbinge's Silverberry for Year-Round Structure and Screening

Elaeagnus × ebbingei 'Compacta' is a dense, evergreen shrub valued for its attractive silvery-green foliage and naturally tidy, compact habit. The leathery leaves carry a subtle metallic sheen — grey-green on the upper surface and silver beneath — giving the plant a light-reflecting quality that brings year-round brightness to borders, boundaries, and garden schemes. More restrained in growth than the straight species, 'Compacta' is an excellent choice where a well-behaved, low-maintenance evergreen is needed without constant cutting back.

In autumn, small creamy-white flowers emerge, largely hidden among the foliage but unmistakeable for their rich, sweet fragrance — a welcome seasonal bonus. Tough and adaptable, this shrub thrives in exposed coastal gardens, urban settings, and dry or challenging soils, making it one of the most reliable evergreens available for UK gardens.

Habit and Appearance

Foliage and form. 'Compacta' forms a rounded, bushy mound of densely packed, slightly wavy, leathery leaves. The upper leaf surface is grey-green with a gentle silvery sheen, while the underside is distinctly silver, catching the light as the foliage moves in the breeze. The overall effect is one of soft, understated elegance throughout every season.

Flowers and interest. Small, tubular, creamy-white flowers appear in autumn, nestled discreetly beneath the foliage canopy. Though modest in appearance, they carry an exceptionally sweet fragrance that drifts noticeably through the garden. Occasional small, red-orange fruits may follow, providing additional wildlife interest.

Growing Conditions

Position. Elaeagnus × ebbingei 'Compacta' performs best in full sun to partial shade. It is notably tolerant of exposed, windy, and coastal positions, as well as urban pollution, making it suitable for a wide range of challenging garden environments.

Soil. This shrub is adaptable to most well-drained soils, including poor, sandy, or dry ground. It tolerates a range of soil pH levels and, once established, is highly drought-tolerant. Avoid waterlogged or persistently wet conditions, which can cause root problems over time.

Hardiness. Fully hardy throughout the UK, coping reliably with winter cold, salt-laden winds, and exposed sites with minimal protection required.

Care and Pruning

General care. Elaeagnus × ebbingei 'Compacta' is a low-maintenance shrub that requires little attention once established. Water regularly during the first growing season to encourage strong root establishment, after which it is largely self-sufficient even during dry spells.

Pruning. Pruning is straightforward and infrequent. Trim lightly in late spring or early summer to maintain a neat shape and encourage dense, bushy growth. Avoid hard pruning into old wood where possible. If used as a formal hedge or screen, a second light clip in late summer can help keep growth tidy through winter. Remove any reverted shoots — those with plain green foliage — promptly at the base to maintain the characteristic silver-green appearance of the variety.

Feeding. An application of a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in spring will support healthy growth, though this shrub is generally unfussy and performs well even in low-fertility soils.

Elaeagnus × ebbingei 'Compacta' is an outstanding all-rounder — tough, fragrant, and quietly beautiful, with the reliability and year-round presence that makes it a staple of low-maintenance garden design.
