Prunus laurocerasus ‘Etna’ – often sold as Dwarf Cherry Laurel ‘Etna’

Key Features

  • Compact Growth: Much smaller than the standard Cherry Laurel, reaching around 1.5–2m tall and wide in time, so it’s ideal for lower hedges or foundation planting.

  • Evergreen: Large, glossy green leaves give year-round screening.

  • New Growth: Young leaves emerge a striking bronze-red, maturing to dark green.

  • Flowers & Berries: Upright clusters of creamy-white flowers in spring, followed by black berries in autumn – good for pollinators and birds.

  • Hardy & Easy: Tolerant of shade, drought once established, and urban pollution.

Uses

  • Low hedging or edging – neat, dense, and more controllable than full-size laurel.

  • Screening in smaller gardens – doesn’t swamp the space.

  • Evergreen structure – works well mixed with other shrubs for year-round backbone planting.

  • Containers – stays neat and compact.

Growth & Care

  • Rate: Moderate grower – not as fast as common laurel, so easier to maintain.

  • Soil: Any reasonable, well-drained soil.

  • Light: Sun or partial shade (does very well in shade compared with many other hedging shrubs).

  • Pruning: Once a year after flowering is enough, or clip lightly to shape.
