Laurel Hedging 'Etna' is a dwarf, compact variety with stunning dark green foliage and new growth that emerges in a lovely coppery orange. It is exceptionally hardy and very tolerant of challenging conditions, making it suitable for cold and exposed areas, full sun and full shade.
The hedging style is best for a smaller garden as it does not spread or reach the heights of other types of Laurels. If you want a full screen in a tight space this plant is ideal!
Where should I site my Dwarf Cherry Laurel Etna?
Laurel Etna is a shorter hedge that provides a clearer view of your garden, neatly sections off areas and allows more light to penetrate, helping other plants to thrive. We recommend planting 2 to 3 per meter for optimal density, depending on how quickly you need a solid hedge. These plants can thrive without direct sunlight and are suitable for normal, chalky, and clay soils. Laurel 'Etna' is highly tolerant of pollution, exposure, dry soils, and heavy shade, although it produces the best warm-orange foliage in sunny conditions. With its slower growth rate compared to other laurels, 'Etna' is easily maintained and ideal for smaller gardens.
Watering:
Over-watering should be avoided, as this can lead to root issues. The key is to strike a balance, keeping the soil moist but well-drained to support the plant's lush, evergreen foliage.
Although Cherry Laurels are resilient and can adapt to various environments, it is crucial to water them regularly during the first few years after planting. For new plants, especially during dry periods, water them two to three times a week, avoiding the foliage to prevent fungal diseases. For established plants, continue to water them at least once a week during dry periods. If it has rained naturally, avoid additional watering to prevent overwatering. Monitor the weather to ensure your hedge remains healthy and thriving.
Growth and pruning:
As these are smaller and slower-growing plants, you will realise that you don’t need to prune/trim this style of hedge as often. This means less maintenance once planted and more light shining through into your garden whilst providing a privacy screen.
Cherry Laurel Etna can grow around 20-40cm per year depending on how you look after them.
